Common questions and troubleshooting

How do I add an account?

Click the + button in the extension popup. You can scan a QR code directly from the page, upload a QR image, or enter the secret key manually.

How do I scan a QR code from a webpage?

Click + → Scan from Page. The extension will capture the visible tab and detect any QR codes automatically. Make sure the QR code is fully visible on screen.

How do I import from Google Authenticator?

In Google Authenticator, go to Settings → Transfer accounts → Export accounts. This shows a QR code. Use Scan from Page or upload a screenshot of that QR code to import all your accounts at once.

I forgot my passphrase

Your passphrase is never stored or transmitted — it exists only in your memory. If you've lost it, there is no way to recover your encrypted vault. This is by design for your security. If you have a backup file and remember its passphrase, you can restore from that.

My codes aren't working

TOTP codes are time-based. If your codes are consistently wrong, your device clock may be out of sync. Make sure automatic date and time is enabled in your system settings.

How do I back up my accounts?

Open the extension, go to Settings → Export Backup. This saves an AES-256 encrypted file to your downloads. Store it somewhere safe. You can restore it on any Chrome browser with Secure Authenticator installed.

Does this work offline?

Yes. Secure Authenticator makes zero network requests. Everything runs locally in your browser, so it works without an internet connection.

Is my data synced across devices?

No. Your vault is stored locally on each device. To move your accounts to another device, export a backup and import it on the other browser.

Keyboard shortcut

Press Ctrl+Shift+L (or Cmd+Shift+L on Mac) to open the extension instantly. You can customize this in Chrome at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
